What To Expect

Birla Mandir Temple (Lakshmi Narayan)

The Laxminarayan temple or Birla Mandir was built by an Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist Baldeo Das Birla and his son Jugal Kishore Birla from 1933 to 1939. It was built under the guidance of Pandit Vishwanath Singh.

Maharaja Udhaynhanu Singh laid the foundation of the temple in 1933.

The Father of the Nation i.e. Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated the Birla Mandir in 1939 with a condition that all classes of people would be allowed to visit inside the temple and there would be no differentiation which means all are equal.

Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, is one of the five observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the year 1724. The Jantar Mantar observatory in Delhi comprises of 13 astronomical instruments. The structure uses the position of the sun and the direction of the shadows to tell time in the ancient days. It has been designed skilfully to also predicts the movement and position of other celestial bodies in space.

Red Fort

Red Fort, also called Lal Qila, Mughal fort in Old Delhi, India. It was built by Shah Jahān in the mid-17th century and remains a major tourist attraction. The fort was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007. The fort’s massive red sandstone walls, which stand 75 feet (23 metres) high, enclose a complex of palaces and entertainment halls, projecting balconies, baths and indoor canals, and geometrical gardens, as well as an ornate mosque.

Friday Mosque (Jama Masjid)

It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 and 1656 at a cost of one million rupees, and was inaugurated by Imam Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari from Bukhara. The mosque was completed in 1656 AD with three great gates and two 40 metres high minarets constructed with strips of red sandstone and white marble. The courtyard can accommodate more than 25000 people.

Raj Ghat

Next is the most revered memorial, Raj Ghat, where the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. This great proponent of ‘ahmisa’ (non violence) took on the might of the British empire head on in India’s struggle for independence. He was assassined on 30th January 1948 by Nath ram godse. His last words were ‘He Ram’ – words that are engraved on his memorial. You can visit these memorials to pay obeisance to these great men and women, and also to enjoy some peace and quiet and the green surroundings.

Shakti Sthal

Next to Shanti Van is Shakti Sthal, the memorial dedicated to India’s third prime minister Mrs Indira Gandhi. The memorial is aptly named, as Mrs Gandhi was reputed to be an iron lady. It was under her stewardship that India decisively won the 1971 war against Pakistan.

National Gallery of Modern Art

The former residential palace of Maharaja of Jaipur was later transformed into National Gallery of Modern Art. Former Vice President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the gallery in presence of the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru on March 29, 1954. The gallery has a wonderful collection of around 15,000 paintings, sculptures and works of arts by Indian an international artists.

Rashtrapati Bhavan

Rashtrapati Bhavan the official residence of the President of India was designed as the residence of the Viceroy in the British Imperial capital. Edwin Lutyens designed this building, then known as Government House or the Viceroy’s House. 29,000 workers were employed to construct the Viceroy's House. Construction began in 1914 and continued till 1927. It is the largest residential complex ever built for a head of the state anywhere in the world and spread across 320 acres with 340-rooms which includes the official residence of the President of India, halls, guest rooms, offices etc.. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is an awe-inspiring structure, a stoic symbol of British imperialism (interestingly, its façade is the same length— 630 ft—as that of Buckingham Palace). After India’s independence in 1947, the last Governor-General, C. Rajagopalachari, stayed on at the Rashtrapati Bhavan until 1950, when the republic’s first President, Rajendra Prasad, shifted into the building.

The Parliament House (Hindi: Sansad Bhavan, transl. Parliament Building) in New Delhi is the seat of the Parliament of India. At a distance of 750 meters from Rashtrapati Bhavan. The building was designed by the British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker and was constructed between 1921 and 1927.

Lotus Temple

The Lotus temple, constructed entirely out of white marble from Penteli mountain in Greece, the very same from which many ancient monuments and other Bahá'í Houses of Worship are built. The temple consists of twenty seven massive marble petals shaped like an unfolding lotus flower, which rises from nine pools and walkways. The number nine signifies the nine unifying paths of the Baha’i faith. This temple is one amongst the seven Bahai Houses of Worship around the world, and is open to people of all faith and religion. The temple does not have any idol or icon, but merely a meditation hall where people of all faith can meditate and be close to God.

Qutub Minar

Our next attraction is an heritage monument. Qutub Minar is a towering 73 meter high tower built by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak in 1193. The tower was built to celebrate Muslim dominance in Delhi after the defeat of Delhi’s last Hindu ruler. The first three storeys of the Qutub Minar are made of red sandstone and the last two are made of marble and sandstone. Apart from the tower, the Qutub Minar complex comprises of the the first mosque built in India Quwwat-us-Islam , the tomb of Iltutmish, Ala’i-Darwaza and the Ala’I Minar. Alai Minar construction was started by Alaudin Khilji, who probably wanted it to be bigger and taller than the Qutub Minar. The construction was halted when he died and not taken up again. Another popular attraction is the Iron Pillar, a marvel of architecture, for the way it has resisted corrosion through the last 1,600 years.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum

Our Next stop, Indira Gandhi museum. Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was India’s third prime minister and the daughter of the First Prime Minister of Independent India. On 31st October 1984 she was assassinated by her own bodyguards. The house where she was residing and later assasinated has been converted into a museum . Inside the museum, her belongings are preserved the way they were when she was alive. One can also see the collection of rare photographs of the Nationalist movement, the personal moments of the Nehru-Gandhi family and her childhood. Fragments of the clothes she was wearing and, even more poignantly, her trainers, are on display. On the way out, you’ll pass an enclosed crystal pathway that marks Late Indira Gandhi’s final footsteps before her murder.

Humayun's Tomb

Our next attraction is a heritage monument - Humayun’s tomb. Humayun’s wife, Hamida Banu, or Hazi Begum, was instrumental behind the construction of this magnificent tomb. The tomb took 14 years to construct, this was the first garden tomb in India, and was a precursor to the magnificent Taj Mahal which was built by Humayun’s great grandson Shah Jahan 60 years later in Agra. The tomb complex has several interesting monuments apart from the main tomb itself like the Barber’s tomb. It is believed to be the tomb of Humayun’s barber – the importance accorded signifies the position of high trust that the royal barber enjoyed amongst royal servants.

Swaminarayan Akshardham

Akshardham Temple of New Delhi is also known as Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple. It is one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in India. It was officially inaugurated on 6th November, 2005. Its history and facts reflects 10,000 years old India’s culture, spirituality and architecture. It has been made in the memory of Jyotirdhar Swaminarayan Bhagwan. The construction of Akshardham Complex was completed in just five years with the efforts of Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) along with the help of thousands of artisans and BAPS volunteers. The temple is spread over 83,342 square feet area. It consists of 350 feet long, 315 feet wide and 141 feet high monuments, which are very attractive. The structure of the temple was designed in such a way that it can last for at least 1000 years more.
